I Just Wanna Be Your Tugboat Captain

Galaxie 500 re-issues are out as of yesterday. 2010 just won't quit.

[Edit 4/1/10 - I just realized why I love this song so much. The intro sounds comfortingly similar to Black Tambourine's Black Car, which incidentally, has also just been reissued. Yay!]

Drone

You can't see me but I know you're there.

The Big Pink and A Place to Bury Strangers are also on their way. I do love dark and gritty haunting drone.

It'll be a good week.

Just a Kid at Heart

Today's lunch is pb & j and a glass of vanilla almond milk. I feel so first grade right now.

These guys are coming into town in a couple of weeks and I'm really looking forward to a night of swoony lovestruck addictive baby pop. If you get a chance check out the videos for Sweetest Thing and If Looks Could Kill. Both pretty adorable with lyrics that sting like the burn of cotton candy.

I really really really hope they play these though.

Rose, I'm feeling older
Courage my love will make me bolder
Expecting softness can lead to foolishness
When I choose my colour it will be Razzle Dazzle Rose.

Eisbär

I love this song because Eisbären müssen nie weinen. As in polar bears must never cry.

This version was directed by Bořivoj Hořínek [the Hungarian/Czech commercials are worth visiting the link].

The fierce fashions and dance moves make this video ace in my book.

Lullaby

A sort of lullaby as the lyrics are sad but the melody is beautiful and soothing.

Good night sweet void.

A Wild Sheep Chase

I'm slowly re-reading Murakami's entire collection and realizing the first time through and in some cases even the third time around I've missed entire gems of passages. This is just one of the many reasons I love his quirky mixture of surrealist pulp-style fiction.

-Excerpt from A Wild Sheep Chase, the chapter "Wherefore the Worm Universe:

There are symbolic dreams - dreams that symbolize some reality. Then there are symbolic realities - realities that symbolize a dream. Symbols are what you might call the honorary town councillors of the worm universe. In the worm universe, there is nothing unusual about a dairy cow seeking a pair of pliers. A cow is bound to get her pliers sometime. It has nothing to do with me.

Yet the fact that the cow chose me to obtain her pliers changes everything. This plunges me into a whole universe of alternative considerations. And in this universe of alternative considerations, the major problem is that everything becomes protracted and complex. I ask the cow, "Why do you want the pliers?" And the cow answers, "I'm really hungry." So I ask, "Why do you need pliers if you're hungry?" The cow answers, "To attach them to the branches of the peach tree." I ask, "Why a peach tree?" To which the cow replies, "Well that's why I traded away my fan, isn't it?" And so on and so forth. The thing is never resolved, I begin to resent the cow, and the cow to resent me. That's a worm's eye view of its universe. The only way to get out of that worm universe is to dream another symbolic dream.

There's something attractive about even a literary black sheep.

Black Like My Heart

So I'm working on a new mix cd - not to swap, just for me but I'm curious what any of you might add to yours if you were to make one. The theme is "black" - to be interpreted any which way you like. This one might take me awhile, since I have so many good dark tracks to choose from.

If you haven't checked these cats out before, their new LP Six was released over the summer.

Something by them will most definitely make it on the Black Mix.

One of my personal favorites:

Lust on a Friday

Since it seems to be a re-occuring theme that Fridays be all about my lustful aggravations, here's another salivatory desire.

RIP Sparklehorse

Mark Linkous - brainchild behind Sparklehorse
9/9/62-3/6/10

Though I haven't listened to him in years, his album Good Morning, Spider kind of changed my late adolescent life.

Colin Greenwood of Radiohead wrote a nice tribute:

"I was very sad to hear the news that Mark Linkous has died. He and his band toured with us in Europe, at the start of OK Computer, and they were great every night. His first two records were very important to me, and I carried his music from the tour into my life, and my friends’ lives too. He was softly spoken, with an Old South courtesy I hadn’t heard before: he introduced me to Daniel Johnston’s music, and the West Virginian writing of Pinckney Benedict. Mark wrote and played some beautiful music, and we’re lucky to have it. Rest in Peace."

One.

Recently, I initiated a cd swap among some of my musicphile friends with this one [as it was the inaugural swap] themed "One" - all tracks to be track ones off of their respective albums.

This one didn't make it onto the mix; though this is definitely one of my top albums.

One of my personal favorites off the album is this one.

Seen it all I'm already there

Save your books and your pills
I don't need them I'm there

You can do anything you want to
All you've got to do is try

I thought my best days had left me
My best years had left me behind

Then I felt them come back (to me)
And all the wild eyes
All the wild eyes know what I mean

If trees cut stars and eyes to heaven
I'll bend them back and bend them again
If my skin looks tired and old from living
I'll turn right back and live it again
You better pray when the music stops
And you're left alone in your mind
'Cause I'll be hearing music till the day I die

Long Live Skuzzy Pop!

MGMT, Talking Heads and The Stooges. Funnest mixed cd ever? Maybe.

More like the clever sounds of the Rabalais brothers otherwise known as Porno Galactica [they also go by Utopia Park].

Catchy, distorted punk - it's some of the best coagulated postmodern pop I've heard in awhile. It's like David Byrne and Iggy Pop got together and had pop babies.

Their album, Romance in the New World is available on ITunes, Amazon and via their Myspace which has some FREE downloads.

With shows left in New Orleans, Mobile, Arkansas and Georgia - hope you catch them as their live show is not to be missed!

Boys come back to Texas soon!

Check out this early recording of Concrete Dinosaur.

They also have a Tshirt website called Yellow Elephant. If Iowa is this cool I sense a roadtrip in my future.
